An Evening of Dance

Tonight I attended a master class held by Leine & Roebana dance company. It was my first dance class in a few months. Earlier in the year I was enrolled in a modern class at the university. I have since withdrawn from that class since it was difficult for me to attend. I had a severe lack of motivation. I was having withdrawal and when a good friend whom I hadn't seen in a few months emailed me to go, of course I went!
Maybe this is what all those dance dreams have been leading me to. Perhaps this is why lately when listening to music in my car my brain has been flooded with choreographic ideas. I also found it an odd coincidence that their style is similar to what I've been thinking about in my head lately. Their style is very post-modern and I can best describe the movement as visceral. They are very focused on beginning movement at the body's core. The limbs move in reaction to the center. Occasionally, a movement is initiated by an arm movement, but it is meant to be a surprise.
They are very geometric. The movements form shapes and each movement melts into the next. No abrupt stopping and starting is seen. We learned a potion of their piece they are performing for the majority of the class. I liked this part. The last 15 minutes or so were spent creating our own geometric movement and sharing it with another and then performing it. I did not participate. Personally, I don't like going to a master class and creating my own thing. The point is to go and learn from them. I feel that when companies do this, they are looking for new material. Maybe I'm wrong, but why not? It is like free labor for them and it's not copyrighted or patented. That's not what I'm about. If I want to create something, I'll do it by myself and perhaps market my own show. ;)
Overall, I enjoyed the class and it felt great to move.

Signs...isn't that the theme of this week? Signs are everywhere.
